Becoming a CAA member requires specialized knowledge, technical training, and real-world operational experience in managing avalanche risks. By joining the CAA, you earn a credential that demonstrates your ability to protect both people and property from avalanches, showcasing you as a trusted professional in the field. We strive to ensure that our diverse membership meets the highest standards and adheres to best practices through Continuing Professional Development. Individual CAA membership categories come with a scope of practice. The scope of practice for each category broadly defines the range of activities and services a CAA member in that category is authorized to perform. Member Categories
The Canadian Avalanche Association is comprised of six membership types, each serving different purposes and levels of experience. If you’re interested in becoming a member, click on the membership type that best suits your level to find out more.
Avalanche Professional
Our highest level of membership. Avalanche Professionals develop, design, and deliver avalanche risk assessments, education programs, and risk management programs. This level is reserved for experienced professionals leading avalanche control teams, making operational forecasts, and managing clients in guiding contexts.
Advanced Avalanche Educator
Members who are qualified to deliver advanced recreational avalanche courses that are part of the Avalanche Canada Training Program curriculum.
Basic Avalanche Educator
Members who are qualified to deliver introductory recreational avalanche education content with limited avalanche terrain exposure as part of the Avalanche Canada Training Program curriculum.
Associate Member
Associate memberships are for organizations who wish to be connected to the CAA and informed about the avalanche industry in general. These organizations tend to offer services connected to the snow and avalanche sector that are valued by our practicing members.
Affiliate Member
Individuals who wish to be connected to the industry and enjoy some of the benefits of membership early in their career. These individuals may be considering becoming practitioners in the future or have other personal or professional reasons to wish to be connected and informed about the CAA and the avalanche industry in general.
Members may change their membership type as their professional roles evolve, life circumstances shift, they take a career break, or they face challenges meeting ongoing professional development requirements. We encourage members to remain part of the CAA by transitioning to the membership category that best reflects their current situation.
