Late-in-Career Policy.
Members nearing the end of their careers seeking to reduce hours prior to retirement may not meet the requirements of their membership class in relation to CPD activity. Provided the member complies with the CPD and career recess policies, they remain a member in good standing of the association.
Eligibility
The provisions of this policy are available to members who are in good standing and have been a practicing member of the Association continuously for no less than 15 years in the following categories:
- Basic Avalanche Educator
- Avalanche Practitioner
- Avalanche Professional
- Advanced Avalanche Educator
Requirements
A member wishing to declare they are late-in-career shall:
- submit a request to the Membership Chair stating the date from which the member wishes to be considered late-in-career, including information about the work the member intends to undertake while in this status;
- be listed in the CAA Member Directory in the category in which they were last practicing, with the added notation “late-in-career” to flag the member’s status to the public;
- be relieved of five years of CPD requirements;
- still maintain CPD records;
- seek the advice of Membership Services or the Professional Practices Specialist when unsure of how this policy should be applied;
- retain voting rights within the CAA and other benefits;
- receive a 50% reduction in the dues from the fully-practicing category; and
- be referred to the Conduct Investigation Committee where a member appears to be practicing in excess of this policy or decisions set out by the Membership Chair.
Limitations
A member can be in late-in-career status for a maximum of five years. Within those five years, should a member wish to return to full practice, a letter should be sent to the Membership Chair explaining the reason and confirming they intend to fully adhere to the CPD policy going forward.
If a member is in either late-in-career status for a total of five years, they must then apply to return to fully practicing membership or move to retired status.
Appeals
The Membership Chair has the discretion to approve, review, and, if required, remove late-in-career status from a member as deemed appropriate. Where the member believes the Membership Chair has erred in judgment, a written appeal can be made to the Board of Directors to review the decision. The decision of the Board of Directors in such cases is final.
